Biodegradable Bullets That Sprout Plants

Have thought about bullets giving life other than killing? No… I guess. But this is what new technology is about to do—The Impossible. The bullets fired are not only a physical danger but they are not eco-friendly too. The bullet shells littered on the ground is difficult to clean, so they are left there itself.

Biodegradable Bullets That Sprout Plants

The metal rusts and other chemicals let out by the shells can pollute the groundwater and soil.

The Department of Defense (DoD) wants a solution for this problem. So are trying to develop biodegradable bullets loaded with seeds of beneficial plants that are eco-friendly. These plants can degrade the ammunition debris and contaminants.

The material best suited for carrying the embedded seed is biodegradable plastics. The seeds are bioengineered such that they can germinate only after several months when in the ground. The research for use of other materials is still on.

After the DoD’s request, the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory has started its research on testing and developing seeds that can be set in the biodegradable bullets.

After February 8, the chosen contractors will develop the biodegradable bullets for a phase process. In Phase I, the contractor will make the training rounds for 40mm and 120mm, which will be the primary focus. Phase II includes development of a prototype and the ways to manufacture it and in Phase III the biodegradable bullets will be used at the Army training facilities. The plants generated can help as feed for local animals or remove soil contaminants.

In other words, the bullets won’t kill, they will give life…
